The Fine Thyme Belles is a wonderful group of women brought together by their love of singing, friendship, and community spirit. Led by the talented Rachel Peters, the group welcomes and encourages anyone to join, regardless of their singing experience or skill level.

The members generously volunteer their time and talent, performing free of charge at rest homes, retirement villages, community events, and local gatherings. Through their music, they bring joy, connection, and entertainment to people throughout the community, making a meaningful difference wherever they perform.

Rachel Peters – Volunteer Musical Director

“Music gives people a place to belong, no matter their background, confidence, or experience.”

Central Otago is incredibly passionate about sport, which is wonderful, but the arts can sometimes sit quietly in the background. While music opportunities in schools continue to grow, there are still limited ways for adults to stay connected with community music and performance.

Leading the Belles was never part of the original plan, Rachel admitted. “I honestly started with major imposter syndrome,” she laughs. “I could sing, but I’d never led a group, conducted, or even confidently played piano in front of others.” Three years on, Rachel jokes she finally feels more like an actual musical director than “the last resort.”

What began as stepping in to help has grown into something far more meaningful. Watching people gain confidence, build friendships, and experience genuine joy through music has become the driving force behind her dedication to the group.

Raised in the UK surrounded by music, dance, and performing arts, creativity was always present, although singing itself became important later in life. “The beautiful thing about singing is that everyone already has the instrument — their voice.”

That belief became the foundation of the Belles. The group is intentionally non-auditioned, creating a safe and welcoming environment where anyone can take part, regardless of confidence or musical experience. “It’s not about being perfect. It’s about connection, courage, and creating something together.”

When considering the highlights of her volunteer role, Rachel reflects, “One of the most emotional moments came during the opening of the Cromwell War Memorial Gardens for ANZAC Day this year. Performing as part of a such an important moment for Cromwell was something deeply special for everyone involved. It reminded me that music can do so much more than entertain. That it can bring people together, encourage remembrance, honour sacrifice, and create a real sense of unity within a community.”

For Rachel, that moment captured exactly why volunteering in the arts matters — not for recognition, but for the lasting impact it has on people and community connection.

Susie Geh

Susie is one of the quiet forces behind the Fine Thyme Belles, generously giving her time simply for the love of the group and the joy it brings others.

While she’s quick to credit “the many volunteers” and “our amazing lead Rachel,” Susie plays an important role behind the scenes helping keep things running smoothly and creating the warm community the Belles are known for.

“Singing with a group is a beautiful thing,” she says. “I enjoy being able to contribute in a small way to something which makes people happy. It helps that working with Rachel is fun ”

For Susie, Belles is about far more than music. She believes the group creates an important sense of belonging and connection for women in the community. “If, like me, you love to sing but performing fills you with fear, then group singing is the perfect option,” she laughs. “There are always people to hide behind!”

She says the friendships and shared moments are “good for the soul,” and some of the most meaningful experiences come from singing at local care homes. “Every time it reminds me why I help,” she shares. “It’s such a lovely connection between audience and performers.”

It’s this genuine care, quiet dedication, and love for the people within the group that make Susie such a special part of the Fine Thyme Belles family.

The Fine Thyme Belles are a shining example of the power of volunteering in our community. Their performances are more than just songs—they are gifts of time, talent, and kindness, shared freely with others.

The group continues to thrive because of these generous volunteers, whose passion and commitment make a lasting difference. Without them, the music, laughter, and community spirit they create simply wouldn't be possible.
